- Science and Pseudoscience in Adult Nutrition Research and Practice July 7, 2009Stuart Buck writes: You posted about this once on your blog, i.e., how many times observational studies have been refuted by clinical trials. Check out the following, especially Table 3. He's linking to an interesting article by Reynold Spector, who claims that lots of the advice we've been hearing from the nutrition experts (eat less fat […]Andrew Gelman
- Not from the Onion: Teacher Rubber Rooms June 24, 2009Hundreds of New York City public school teachers accused of offenses ranging from insubordination to sexual misconduct are being paid their full salaries to sit around all day playing Scrabble, surfing the Internet or just staring at the wall, if that's what they want to do.Because their union contract makes it extremely difficult to fire them, the teac […]Alex Tabarrok
- Those who don't know statistics are doomed to . . . rely on statistics anyway June 2, 2009To paraphrase Bill James, the alternative to doing statistics is not "not doing statistics," it's "doing bad statistics." - The law of one price? May 12, 2009Jason Kottke informs us:Ticket prices at the new Yankee Stadium are so high that if a New Yorker wants to watch a Mariners/Yankees game from the best seats, it would be a lot cheaper to fly to Seattle, stay in a nice hotel, eat fancy dinners, and see two games. Was it not Mises who said that the purchasing power of money is the same everywhere? Some of the p […]Tyler Cowen
- Fake Grammar Experts April 16, 2009A favorite question here at OB is: who are the real experts? Most people think of grammar as an area where expertise is especially respected and organized; experts coordinate to decide the right answers and then tell the rest of us what to think. That is certainly the impression most English teachers give us. But in fact the "expert" grammar the […]Robin Hanson
